SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT!

Precious metals are flying as the recovery takes place from the Covid 19 pandemic.
Palladium and gold are now likely to stay static or decline slightly.
Platinum with its myriad of uses is likely  to climb faster now and its run is definitely not over.
See the right hand column for the latest updates on mining news.

BREAK THROUGH !

1.  Mining will be a great South African stabiliser ,post COVID-19 outbreak! This will help in the recovery of our monetary system and create work. Of course this will have to be managed well and assets not wasted on graddiose ideas or corrupt practises!

2.  With great innovators still in South Africa ,which we must appreciate ,great strides can be made to eventually employ thousands of workers.

3. Take for example which with our technicians has come up with the plan to produce hydrogen more cheaply below R100  /per kg which compares well with the price of petrol, by an electroliser that eliminates costly membranes.
This device was invented and built with the help of SHELL. It is a green deal and won the award for NATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY  IN INNOVATION !
This will unlock the fuel cell industry and create a renewed demand for PLATINUM !

PGM's prices on the Move !

As soon as the "Discovery" ! , is made that Platinum group metals are more suitable in fighting pollution than lithium will ever be there is likely to be an explosive increase in PGM,s prices.
How ever a basic higher price is likely to occur as soon as a ramp up in production provides the necessary minerals to the market ,which is likely to be in the form of controlled production as mines cut back sharply last time when there was a surplus.
Platinums price has now increased by US$100 per ounce in the last quarter to +- $942 per ounce.
and is likely to sustain a basic price of over US$1300 over the next decade.
Paladium is now around US$1500 and is very profitable at this level . It might not increase much in price going forward as platinum is likely to take over as it is more efficient in fuel cells and catylitic converters.
The rarer metal Rhodium has soared to US5000 per ounce. We can not tell if this is due to use or speculation! It is used in only specific industry but is likely to stay at a higher price going forward.
PGM,s are used in heavy industry and heavier transport situations. As ordinary autos are starting  to take up more of these metals there is likely to be a run on prices!

Save the Planet run Amock ! Nothing new in the world 2023 June !

2023 populations are starting to fall with out human tinkering. god be praised !
Young teens and twenties are always looking at something to save. Above these year groups for the most part get a good dose of reality as economic issues start to press in on a personal level as personal sponsors (MUM,DAD  the STATE ? ) start withdrawing funds given for study etc.
Save the whale ,fish and so forth. Stop nuclear development in any form egged on by Russia in the form of provocateurs etc.
The latest craze started as PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING. Even salted politicians jumped on the band wagon. The original scientist said he was misunderstood and such a process could not be reversed by human behaviour. Billions have already been wasted on this endevour. Egged on
by people making money out of this passtime. this then became CLIMATE CHANGE which put new life into the campaign . As this starts to fade the calling is now been labeled CLIMATE CARBON DISASATER! Wow surely they will run out of cliches soon!
I do believe plastics have been overused and of course its good to clean up our environment.I was watching a documentry of a city in India that produces so much rubbish daily that the dump will in ten years time be higher than the Taj Mahal monument!
My own take on this.
LIMITING THE EARTH POPULATION TO CHILDREN PER FAMILY REPLACEMENT IS THE ANSWER. NOTHING DRASTIC NEED BE DONE TOACHIEVE THIS BUT TAX AND GRANT INCENTIVES FOR STERILISATION
SHOULD DO THE TRICK
Hessian bags to carry maize are a renewable product as hessian comes from PLANTS ETC  better than plastic.
DO NOT REMOVE TOO MUCH CARBON DIOXIDE NATURALLY PRODUCED FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AS TREES NEED THIS TO PRODUCE OXYGEN WE BREATHE IN TO STAY ALIVE ! ARTIFICIAL MEANS MUST BE FOUND TO PRODUCE MORE OXYGEN AS TOO MAY TREES ARE BEEN CUT DOWN!

Lack of Patience in World Clean Air Events !

1. The drive to lithium is now well under underway. The British government is about to spend millions on lithium service points,as well I suspect probably the rest of the first world as well, as private enterprise could really not keep up. So far all lithium battery  auto companies are running at a loss.
A few points to consider :-
a. Lithium is a rare earth metal so not in unlimited supply (spodium).
b. Governments are at last admitting that solar power is not likely to be able or best at loading points to power battery chargers. Coal powered  electricity will still power  most of the loading points for the forsee-able future!
c. At the moment batteries have to be charged for at least half an hour every 500 km!
d.Lithium batteries have not to date had a good safety record!
e.It seems as if lithium might be hazardous to health in numerous ways as well.
2. Well proven methods with fuel cell technology although not receiving the attention of lithium and proven results is soaring ahead in Sweden Volvo,Ballard company and many smaller  companies in America and Toyota in Japan. supplies of Platinum will last for at least the next couple of hundred years.

The New Hydrogen AGE, REVOLUTION !

HYDROGEN which can easily be extracted from water is likely to drive the  new clean air revolution.
This is the preferred fuel that works with Platinum catalityic fuel cells. Its half the price of pretroleum fuels and has the advantage of being 100 % free of pollution.
Of course there's talk of using boron etc .to cut out rare earth ,such as platinum altogether ,but these experiments are still unproven.
When platinum is used for catalysts the power produced is strong enough to drive the largest stationary engines or so little can be used for small engines.
Toyota and other car,bus and heavy duty manufacturers have all chosen platinum to drive their future plans.
Germany is also tooling up now. Their leading manufacturer Mercedes Benz is also getting in on the act.
South Africa is the leading country regarding supply of platinum in the world .Impala platinum mine is now gearing up to supply their own electricity.
There is genuine scope for down-line applications helping create work locally. Do read all the other posts that I have written on platinum group metals over the years. Click on labels below or in the side-bar.

MINING TO BE INVIGORATED IN SOUTH AFRICA !

The Mandela Mining Precinct is being brought back to life with varying amounts of researches again .Anglo Plats is giving $60 million to investigate all facets of Fuel Cells. This effort is also being encouraged byt he government and the chamber of mines.
This was once the most important investigatory units in the world because of South African's producing and having the most reserves of platinum and gold and other minerals in abundance.
Our mines are amongst the deepest in the world with tunnels between four and six miles deep !

THE BIGGER PICTURE !

Hats off to the Japanese industrialists and government for recognizing the fact that Fuel Cells are far superior to batteries to keep the environment free from pollutants. All the big auto manufacturers and industrial engine manufacturers are on board. Also used in catalytic converters, the Platinum Group Metals are tops.
The rest of the world manufacturers are taking the line of least resistance and falling over each other to produce mostly lithium long life batteries.
Already countries are complaining about the use of electricity that simply will not be enough to reload these batteries and are already suggesting that they will have to recharge them at night, which  by the way usually will take all night  to recharge.
This electricity will mostly be produced by coal fired power stations for almost the next century.
Talk of pollutants!
On the other hand Fuel Cells can get a recharge in about fifteen minutes at special points that will continue to be added to existing garages and larger sites for industrial use.

The year that was !

This has been a year  in which there have been more financial  and political shocks worldwide than normal.Growing  populations have become more restive and even rebellious as the recession lingered on. At year end America is well on the way to recovery and the first sprigs of recovery are seen in Europe and Asia. As always Africa is lagging.
How ever a pleasing change has been seen on the African Continent as populations strive for more accountability and less graft  top of government officials. This is playing itself out especially here in  South Africa as we strive to avoid  downgrades in our borrowing to junk status. As many other major countries have failed this test of morality we have for a second time avoided this fate.
It must be remembered that we produce 80% of the world platinum group metals and also a full range of base metals and minerals.
How ever at the present price of platinum, around $900 per ounce it is being produced at a loss. There is already a shortage of 20% in  ounces, per annum, built up and as fuel cells and other catalytic converters are needed for cleaner air become the vogue. In the last ten years the price has suddenly spurted by a couple of hundred USA dollars per ounce! this exciting event can happen again. Do remember it takes five years to ramp up and open mothballed areas in existing mines and a great deal longer in new developments!
I wish all our readers,Google and our advertisers all the best for 2017.

Keeping Our Breathable World Safe

We should thank JAPAN for the  innovative way  they are introducing ecological changes to the world. A world leader indeed! Using Fuel Cell  technology for the next Olympic games is a great step forward .
They are show-casing the Hydrogen economy, which  is something the rest of the world will have to quickly consider if we want to save our planet as cities become more polluted all the time. Electricity is to be produced solely by fuel cells at the games and all government Honda and Toyota cars will also be powered by fuel cells, during the games.
This is where we South Africans enter the scene as we produce over  70% of the world newly mined platinum, as it is platinum fuel cell that is being used.

Platinum Group Metals now and in the future

The longest strike in South African history, namely five months has come to an end. There were no winners as the workers will have to work up to five years to make up lost  pay under the no work no pay principle and the mines were brought to their knees as there was no spike in the platinum and other related metal prices.
The newest entry is always found at the bottom of the index above. The rest of this article is beneath Alerts and Notes.
ALERT 22/7/2014
It seems as if there is going to be an over supply of COAL in the not too distant future world wide. At the moment ,there is a shortage of coal at our electricity company ,namely ESCOM  perhaps not the time to rush into buying coal mining shares!

 ALERT 10/7/2014
Gold has made a comeback in the last couple of days, much against a the consensus that it will continue to wane. Nervousness about the future of stock markets as they have  out performed the actual recovery as well as slowing growth in Europe's main driver Germany as well as major trouble in Iraq, Syria, Ukraine and over production in China is unsettling the markets, also the firing of indiscriminate rockets into Israel from Gaza that can only be stopped by a ground invasion.

Note 1.See the relaunched  Resources News on page 3 for my reasons for choosing AMPLATS to recover best from the platinum strike above on 3/7/2014

Despite the return to work and hefty increases for entry level miners (20% plus),the mines will not be able to carry as usual on if there is not a significant increase in metal prices soon ,an unlikely event ( Read the recent posts on the strikes as well to fully understand why)
A fact not often written about is that hungry striking miners on some mines opened old ventilation shafts and old entrances to tunnels and stripped the mines of miles of electrical copper cables and iron pipes to sell illegally on the black market to gain money to pay for food to survive the strikes as well. All will have to be replaced now at high prices before mining can safely commence again. Contractors are now being payed off which cause a ripple effect on the economy and as miners retire etc they are not being replaced.
A great deal has been written about mechanizing the mines. This is not always feasible for many of the mines as there narrow ore bodies very deep down. The most likely result is that most of the older mines will close down permanently.
Amplats and the other miners will also probably sell off the deeper mines and go for the opencast option ,as that is the only way they will be able to mechanise.
There is unlikely to be a strike on this scale in the future, which has almost forced our country back into a recession again. Since we pride ourselves on being democratic, the minister of mines is now mulling over legislation that will make it illegal to strike unless a strike ballot is held and sixty percent of the workers approve it. There after further supervised strike ballots must be held say every four weeks. Security will also be beefed up during such an action so as to allow non striking unions members to work with out the danger of being killed. This present strike was called by the union boss and then he used strong arm tactics to enforce it.

FUTURE POWER SOURCES

There are many different types of power sources that are environmentally friendly being developed. There are  almost as many already working but requiring capital as they are hellishly expensive or not quite developed for the purpose they were envisioned for.

See rest of article below Alerts and Notes
ALERT 17/5
We have made no entries into the resource blog for the last two months for the reason we   honestly believe there is no value in this section at the moment .Even when the strike ends the platinum sector will not be in recovery mode as prices of the PGMs is far too low. Demand worldwide now is slowing for most mineral producers as well

One of the most promising is the fuel cell technology, which is already used in outer space satellites, stationary engines , is in the nearing finished stage in automobiles and heavy transport .
A great deal of money was spent on fuel-cells by the PLATINUM companies as well as leading governments world wide, Amplats has taken the lead in South Africa in conjunction with Ballard to produce a home generators on a large scale. This non-grid technology will be able to supply quality electricity to primary to 3,4 million people. A world first.
Amplats is also developing fuel cells to power the electricity needs of the mines as Escom struggles to provide enough electricity from conventional means.
The most exciting development is platinum proton exchange membranes. Concrete steps to fund the roll-out of hydrogen re-fuelling infrastructure in advanced countries is underway.

RESOURCES THE WORLD NEEDS

Central and Southern Africa have many strategic minerals in abundance and are amongst world leaders in producing these.
South Africa produces over 72% of the Platinum used in the world
and 83% of the Rhodium for Catalytic converters and other industrial uses.
See rest of this article beneath Alerts and Notes
28/8  ALERT
Tensions are rising world-wide this morning as the Syrian crises is likely to spill over into
more bloodshed with the world powers taking sides. In South Africa we have serious trade union wars in a fight about turf escalating now.The more moderate NUM union has also upped its demands to compete with the more radical unions. Most of the demands now are completely unnatainable, which could bring our country to its knees. The mining of minerals is likely to decrease to a trickle and many mines would forced to close permanently.

9/8 ALERT
SOUTH AFRICAS gold and platinum production continues to decline, year on year.Figures are issued by the governments stastistical department.Bad news for labour and balance of payments.Gold the once dominant metal is down YOY on June by 14%.
Platinum Group Metals is down by 18%.Not good news for these labour intensive industries also bad news for our GDP.
Coal is now our number one export ,bringing the most money.Iron ore also brings more than Gold

3/8 ALERT
We are not the only country with a foreign exchange deficit it seems! India also is having problems at the moment. They have banned the import of physical gold to help balance their books.Soon they will only allow the import of gold that will exit in jewellery. As gold pays such a big part in their culture, this move has sent the price of their own gold sky high!

According to the world bank and South African chamber of Mines last year over half a million people were still employed in the mining industry. We are also the fifth largest producer of gold ,also produce 47%of the worlds chrome used in super alloys, also a large exporter of coal and diamonds.
Our immediate neighbours sharing borders with us name Namibia is a large exporter of Uranium alsoDiamonds,Botswana diamonds and Mozambique coal and one of the few producers outside China of Rare earth minerals. In Central Africa there is the DM Congo that supplies rare earths such as tantalum, cobalt and also diamonds.

Miners Dilemma !

PRECIOUS METAL MINERS have had to deal with unexpected circumstances of late in our country,South Africa and the rest of the world. See article below Notes and Alerts .
ALERT Day 20
SIBANYE mine has closed a shaft at the Beatrice Mine after a fire broke out there. The falling gold price has not helped matters .Now seperate from GFI it is mineral rich and consists of the older parts of the then GOLDFIELDS CONGLOMERATE.Sure its gold is expected to run out around 2030,but in the meantime it will produce good dividends.
ALERT Day 8.
25%OF SOUTH AFRICAS working population is either directly or indirectly dependent on mining, states Anglo American for their income.

NOTE 1.The newest update of the pages above is at the bottom of the index list above
NOTE 2.See above Naomi has updated her analysis

Both Platinum and Gold mines should be making a great recovery now as the share prices of other types of mines and industries recover as the world emerges from the long recession, but they are not.
The question should be asked why?
Well Gold has not as many industrial uses and is more a store of wealth to be held in times when the ecomonies are suffering.
Platinum group metals on the other hand are both in demand as precious metals and have a myriad of industrial uses.
So why is the Platinum price not increasing at a greater pace than it did after the last recession in the ninety nineties? In fact it is struggling to increase at a pace greater than the gold price. The platinum price is now around $1700 as is gold. The price after the last recession reached $2200 per ounce!
The answer is that then there was absolutely no platinum recovery process  in place. Now there is a recovery industry which collects scrap platinum metal from spent catylitic converters. The recovery rate is above 90%.This can then be sold to the users at a price well below the newly mined platinum price.
Palladium and rhodium can also be recovered but as they are not such a threat as the scap platinum recovery is to newly mined platinum.
Rising costs and inflation has rendered about half the platinum group mines unprofitable. Many of the gold producers are suffering a similar fate. See the latest update in the index above on 12 feb 2013.
